ScrippsStore is not a uniform shop and not all clothing sold on ScrippsStore.com is considered acceptable and safe work attire at Scripps’ facilities. Please refer to the Scripps Health Personal Appearance, Uniforms and Equipment policy as well as your own location and department standards to ensure the clothing you purchase is acceptable for work.


Policy: Personal Appearance, Uniforms and Equipment

PURPOSE: This policy establishes standards for personal appearance while conducting business for and representing Scripps.

For additional requirements for specific departments (i.e., surgery, procedural areas, food/nutrition services, pharmacy), refer to Related Practice Documents section, including:

  • Hand Hygiene and Surgical Scrub; S-FW-IC-9028.

  • Surgical Attire; S-FW-IC-0015

  • Infection Control Practices for Food Services; S-FNS-IC-0004

  • Sterile Compounding Practices; S-PH-MM-0009

I. POLICY

  1. Scripps requires all employees to present a professional appearance and dress in a manner consistent with their job responsibilities that maintains the organization’s image and promotes staff and patient safety.

  2. Any employee who does not meet the standards of this policy may be subject to corrective action and/or required to leave the premises. Employees who continue to fail to meet the standards of this policy may receive further corrective action, up to and including termination of their employment.

  3. If any employee believes that they need modification to any of the requirements due to religious and cultural reasons (e.g., head coverings), or to accommodate a physical or mental disability, the employee should contact their manager or Human Resources to discuss the request for modification/accommodation and determine on a case-by-case basis whether Scripps is able to accommodate the employee’s request.

  4. Employee, volunteer, and contractor badges must be worn at all times, above the waist with picture visible, in accordance with Badge, Identification, and Access, S- FW-EC-2003. Personnel may be required to meet special dress, grooming and/or hygiene standards depending on the nature of their job. See below for information regarding the maintenance of, changing into, and wearing of Scripps’ uniforms.

  5. At its discretion, Scripps and/or its facilities may allow employees to dress in a more “business casual” fashion than is normally required. On such occasions, employees are still expected to present a neat appearance and wear appropriate clothing that meets the standards of this policy.

  6. Employees are expected to confer with their manager if they have any doubt about the appropriateness or acceptability of their dress or grooming. Departmental dress code standards must also be observed, if applicable. The personal appearance of all employees is governed by the following standards.

  7. Professional Appearance for All Employees:

1. Good personal hygiene is expected.

a. Hair must be clean and worn in a manner that will not interfere with the performance of the employee’s job or the health and safety of Scripps’ patients.

  1. Hair texture and protected hairstyles historically associated with race or people of African descent including, but not limited to, hairstyles such as braids, locks, and twists will not be considered a violation of this policy.

  2. Makeup must be kept professional and not be distracting or upsetting to patients.

  3. Perfumes and fragrances should be avoided, keeping in mind the sensitivity of patients and others.

  4. Artificial nails (i.e., acrylic, gel, shellac, and silk wrap) are not permitted for staff who provide direct patient care or provide services in departments that specifically do not allow (e.g., Food Services, Pharmacy) .

  1. Tattoos, when visible, may not display sexual, violent, or derogatory images or symbols. Facial tattoos are prohibited.

  2. Personal cell phone for personal use, headphones, earbuds, air pods or any other recreational listening devices should not be worn when you have a potential of interacting with patients, visitors, or coworkers.

  1. Apparel:

    1. Head coverings, such as hoods, hats, and caps, are not appropriate attire unless pre-approved by Human Resources. Head coverings that are associated with religion or culture will not be considered a violation of this policy (i.e., hijab, turban, yarmulke).

    2. Clothing should be business-like, clean, pressed, free of tears, and of appropriate fit. Apparel shall not have a logo prominently displayed unless it is a Scripps logo. When scrubs are worn, they shall not display logos or names of other healthcare facilities.

    3. Jewelry must not interfere with the performance of the employee’s job or present a safety hazard to patients or other employees.

    4. Shoes should be clean and in good condition. Sandals (beach footwear), bare feet, or other footwear that may present a safety hazard are not allowed.

    5. Sweatshirts must be rimmed at sleeves, non-hooded, and of solid color.

  2. Direct Caregivers and Patient Support Staff (i.e., EVS, FNS, Biomed).

    1. Shoes are required to be closed-toed and clean. Clogs are acceptable only with a back strap or enclosed heel. Hosiery or socks must also be worn.

    2. Shoulder length hair or longer must be secured off the face.

    3. Scarves are not permitted.

  3. Uniforms and Equipment

    1. Uniforms: When uniforms of a distinct style are required, they shall be provided and maintained by Scripps. Otherwise, uniforms (e.g., scrubs) shall be maintained by employees.

    2. Uniform Changing: Employees who work in restricted areas that require changing in and out of uniforms at Scripps’ facilities (e.g., Operating Room, Sterile Processing Department) shall be allocated five minutes for changing at both the beginning and end of their scheduled work shifts. Changing shall take place during scheduled work hours and employees shall be compensated for their time spent changing into and out of their uniforms.

    3. Equipment: If Scripps requires employees to use tools or equipment in the performance of their work, an adequate supply of such tools and equipment shall be provided and maintained by Scripps.

4. Termination: When employment terminates, employees must return all issued uniforms and equipment.
